An Example of a Company Program
This manufacturing company had a pressing need
to fill factory positions. The company turned to a group of Eastern
European refugees that had been placed in the St. Louis area.
The benefits to hiring these employees were they were:
| Highly motivated |
Flexible and adaptable |
| Rarely Absent |
Eager to learn new skills |
| Conscientious |
Loyal (Low Turnover) |
Once hired they found a few drawbacks:
- Immigrants tended not to mix with other employees
- Misunderstandings arose with American employees
- English language communication was limited
Initially the company attempted to solve these problems by using a few bilingual English-speaking employees as coaches. This approach turned into a burnout situation and an overuse of these individual's good intentions.
The company subsequently adopted our ESL Training
Solution. We conducted bi-weekly classes over a 13 week period. After
classes the employees achieved:
- Strong sense of gratitude
- Increased self-assurance when dealing with Americans
- Greater use of English in the workplace
- Better communication with management
