Cultural Coaching
It is common for fluent bilingual employees to
get lost in the real day-to-day speech of Americans. One such employee
asked, “Teach
me how to talk so I don’t sound like a dictionary.” Another
employee lost her train of thought when a colleague suggested that a
client was a “pain
in the neck.” She was so busy trying to figure out why they were suddenly
in a conversation about a client’s neck and not discussing their computer
system.
Our Cultural Coaching addresses cultural
awareness, including understanding slang and idioms.
Our cultural coaching classes can be especially
beneficial to physicians, middle and high level business managers, lawyers,
and other professionals. Below are some examples of how we can help
with classes designed to specifically meet the needs of individuals or
small groups.
- slang and idiom training
- business cultural training
- interpersonal training
- general cultural training
- silent editing partner
Classes are designed to include one or a combination of the above options, and can be monitored and changed to meet the specific needs of the client.
“As an international student who came to the
United States six years ago, I studied in school for three years and
have been in the workplace another three years. The language barrier
has been reduced due to my vocabulary building up during the past six
years. But I still feel a big culture barrier even though I have been
working for big companies for three years, as I have had contracts with
BJC, Monsanto, and now Anheuser Busch. I feel so lucky that I found an
excellent ESL teacher, Debbie, who really can help me to do what I was
trying to do. Debbie is not only helping me to study idioms, which is
very important but hard to learn from school, but also helping me to
improve my professionalism at my workplace. Things like how to write
effective emails, how to listen to people, how to build emotional intelligence
at work, what to do if you go to a new assignment, those soft skills
that are as essential as technical skills, but are often ignored and
hard to grasp. I strongly recommend those who want to advance in the
American Society, and get promotions at work, or be a successful entrepreneur,
to start an individual class with Debbie at ESL Educational Services.
Debbie is very dedicated to teaching and trying to do the best for the
students. I have been enjoying class very much.”
